Sam & Sak™

Why do you react the same way?

Because it is not a decision. It is a groove, worn in over years. Your body is running it before you have finished the email, or your coffee.

Think about the last time somebody said something and you were already annoyed before they had finished the sentence. You did not decide to be annoyed. It was happening before you got there.

Meet Sam

Sam is your default.

Short for samskara, the Sanskrit word for a groove worn in by repetition. It is a two thousand year old observation rather than a new one.

Sam is not a flaw and Sam is not laziness. Sam is your nervous system running the fastest route it knows to keep you safe, learned a long time ago, usually with very little to do with today.

Meet Sak

Sak is the part of you that notices.

Short for sakshi, the witness. The observer. The one who hears you say it and thinks, there I go again.

No judging, no arguing. Just seeing. Sak is not the problem either. The timing is.

What it costs

You are projecting the past into the future.

Run the same groove long enough and it stops being a habit. It becomes a forecast. Next year gets built out of what already happened, by a part of you that nobody asked.

And that is the thing limiting you from creating your abundant life. Not money, not time, not the plan you have not written yet. A groove, running quietly, deciding in advance what you are going to reach for.

Most days Sak turns up ten minutes too late.

In the car afterwards. In the shower. Replaying it. The whole job is getting Sak there while it is still happening, because that is the only moment anything can change.

And there is more room in there than it feels like.

Under a minute

All of it happens in about a minute.

  1. The trigger

Something happens. An email. A tone. A name.

  2. The feeling

Something arrives in your body before any thought does.

  3. The check

Your body decides whether this is safe.

  4. The response

You react, or you choose. This is the part you see.

Sam runs this loop without you.
Sak is how you get a say in it.

Five minutes a day

The minute is the thing you change.

Not by trying harder in the moment, which has never worked for anybody. By practising when nothing is happening, so the pause arrives on its own. A breath, or a few minutes, before you answer.

The practice is four moves, always in this order.

  1. Pause

Buys the second everything else needs.

  2. Breathe

A long exhale tells the body it is safe.

  3. Notice

Name what arrived, not what you called it.

  4. Respond

The only one of the four that is a choice.

The loop happens to you.
These four are what you do about it.

What changes

Slowly, you get a new default.

The groove loses its hold. You answer with a new thought instead of the old one, because your nervous system now reads the aligned choice as the safe one.

You did not override anything to do it. Safe is the only argument your nervous system has ever accepted, and it has started reading the new way as safe.
